How To Arrive At Magnificent Self Esteem
Wouldn’t you agree that there is nothing better than when we feel good about ourselves? I notice that when I feel good about myself, the outer world also seems amazing! The world is a better place. Conversely, if I am feeling crap about myself, the outer world also appears pretty dismal.
Would you like to be more conscious about cultivating a more wonderful sense of self? To actually put energy and attention into arriving at magnificent self esteem?
On the way to magnificent self esteem (I’m on the journey) I am first noticing all of the hinderances, all of the opposites. For example when a colleague walked past me without acknowledging me, a “I must be a nothing” story arose in my consciousness. An old younger part of myself, made her behaviour mean something about my self worth.
In this instance, I looked deeper within myself, and I noticed a contraction in my body. This contraction residing in my head, was holding a story about me and my self worth.
These stories and their resultant feelings never feel good at the time, yet if we are on the journey to magnificent self esteem, they are actually little gems. Little gems that are surfacing NOW to show us what unruly beliefs we are holding about ourselves.
Beliefs that came long ago, long before our current situation. In order to arrive at magnificent self esteem, these guys need to be acknowledged, nurtured and released.
We need guidance on how to release old stories
Having no idea on how to deal with uncomfortable feelings growing up, I didn’t know how to skilfully work with negative feelings about myself. In my younger years I probably would have projected the feelings on to others, judging a person if I didn’t feel good around them or if they “did something to me”.
Yes I felt down at times, yet I tried to ‘get on with things’ and not focus on how I felt. I tried intellectualising and telling myself that these feelings weren’t true. Yet none of these tactics worked.
The reason that they didn’t work was because I did not realise that such negative beliefs actually lived inside my body. They in fact landed somewhere in my physiology and made a temporary little home for themselves. Trying to beat them in the mental realm was not enough. I needed to find them in the body and then nurture and release them.
Life is a mirror
I believe that situations in life turn up to reflect our unintegrated psychology straight back to us. For example, when a friend invited all of our old friendship group somewhere except for me, I felt hurt. I didn’t need to waste too much time blaming her though, as I knew to go inside my body and find out where the feeling lived and to work with it directly.
Sure enough I found a story about “no one cares about me” in my head, so I stopped what I was doing and I held it, and cuddled it. I cuddled it as I would cuddle a hurting child. Then, I breathed with this part of myself and invited God into it, to heal it.
Who knows why I wasn’t included, and yes I felt disappointed about it. Yet, I seized the opportunity to free myself of a childhood belief that “no one cared about me”! The friend who didn’t include me, gave me the gift of highlighting to me an old story, whose time it was to dissolve.
As we release these old limited viewpoints, situations either won’t arise to reflect them back to us, or they will not give us an emotional charge. That sounds pretty awesome to me!
This therefore means that any time something happens that doesn’t make us feel good, we need to STOP and investigate our consciousness. We can ask “how does this situation make me feel about myself”?
Let’s practice
I’d like you to think of a situation that is bothering you right now. How does that situation make you feel about yourself?
Stop and turn within and ask yourself “How do you feel?”
Then try “why do you feel like that?”
What are the words that arise within your consciousness? It could be something like “I’m not good enough”, or “life is unfair” ???.
Make a note of it. Let’s give it some air time. Let’s acknowledge this part of you that has been feeling alone for a long time.
Now you see it, you have found your next step towards freedom. You have found the negative self belief that you are holding about yourself or about life, that is now within your reach to nurture and release.
What to do with this feeling?
Now what to do with it? You will need to find a chosen tool or technique to help you to integrate this little guy. There are so many techniques available. Techniques like The Journey or Somatic healing are some of my favourites.
I have tried quite a few healing techniques over the years and I must say that recently I have found the most simple technique that just works with the raw energy itself. It does not involve reliving it, it does not involve even having to talk about it. It simply involves being present with it in the body and using a breathing technique to dissipate it’s intensity. Here is the link to Dr Sue Morter’s work. I recommend it as it is very simple and powerful.
If you want to just work with it on your own though, just start with the steps that I mentioned above. Here they are again.
1. If you are feeling triggered, STOP and find a quiet space.
2. Go within your body and find out where the feeling lives.
3. Ask it how it feels?
4. Ask it why it feels like that?
5. Whereabouts in the body is it? KNOW where it is in the body and bring your presence right inside it, so that you can feel all of it’s sensations.
6. Cuddle the feeling and breath with it. Be with it.
7. Invite God or your higher power into it.
8. Repeat this regularly.
Conclusion
The above practice is a great place to start in freeing yourself to be your most magnificent Self. It is a wonderful act of Self Love. Day by day, step by step, we can nurture and integrate those parts of ourselves that are distorting the magnificence of who we truly are.
In conclusion, we can choose to believe that we are victim to a random and hurtful world, or we can choose to see that difficult situations actually present themselves to us, in order to highlight our unresolved psychology – so that we can be free. Free to be our magnificent Christ Selves.
